About the study

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) can be defined as stressful and traumatic events that people experience throughout childhood and adolescence. The impact of these experiences is such that it can affect the development and well-being of young people in the short and long term.

It is important that researchers have a comprehensive understanding of the different types of Adverse Childhood Experiences. Some researchers believe that there are childhood events that have the potential of affecting the development of people and have not been included in our definition of ‘ACE’. For this reason, the present study seeks to expand our understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences. We want to hear young people’s views on Adverse Childhood Experiences and how they fit in with traditional definitions.

What will it involve?

If you agree to take part, you will complete an online survey anonymously. The survey will ask questions about your age, gender, ethnicity, country of birth, geographical area, self-identification/diagnosis of mental health problem and history of mental health treatment. Additionally, the survey includes questionnaires about your adverse childhood experiences and your overall mental health.

Some questions will be presented as open-ended and you can provide any response you like. Other questions are presented as statements and you will be asked to answer whether you agree with them (e.g., YES/NO, from 0-4). The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
