Gaming, gambling and mental health
About the study
The way that we spend money on video games has changed in recent years. Many popular games now offer the option to spend money on in-game content. One way in which they can do this is by offering items known as loot boxes. These offer players a random chance to obtain in-game content, such as character outfits.
Psychologists are currently looking at whether loot boxes should be regulated as a form of gambling. They are also interested in the effects on our mental health.
This study will explore the links between gaming, mental health and gambling. It will also look at the effect that spending money on loot boxes may have on these factors.
What will it involve?
People will be asked questions about how they play video games, and if/how they spend money in games. The survey will also ask questions about gambling habits, and mental wellbeing.
